The import of smartphones has surged in Nepal in recent years.
According to the Department of Customs, Nepal imported smartphones worth more than Rs 3.46 billion in the Nepali month of Shrawn (mid-July to mid-August) alone.
During the first month of the current fiscal year, Nepal recorded a trade deficit of Rs 116.15 billion, with a total trade volume of Rs 140.60 billion.
Exports amounted to Rs 12.22 billion, while imports reached Rs 128.37 billion in the review month.
However, compared to the same month in the previous fiscal year, imports declined by 0.67 percent, and exports by 9.63 percent.
Nepal incurred a trade deficit of Rs 70.10 billion with India alone in the review month. Imports from India totaled Rs 77.68 billion, while exports were valued at Rs 7.57 billion.
Similarly, imports from China during this period amounted to Rs 24.54 million, with exports reaching Rs 157 million.
Furthermore, Nepal also experienced trade deficits with Qatar, Ukraine, Australia, Bahrain, and Malaysia.
