The Kavrepalanchowk section of the BP Highway will remain closed to traffic for 12 hours each night—from 5 PM to 5 AM—for an additional 15 days.
On July 17, the district administration had restricted night traffic for a month to reduce the risk of monsoon-induced disasters. The restriction has now been extended until August 31.
A meeting of the district security committee on Friday, August 15, made the decision. Vehicular movement will remain barred along the stretch from Kavrebhanjyang to Nepalthok, which borders Sindhuli.
The section has yet to be fully repaired after severe damage caused by floods and landslides in the last week of September 2024.
Earlier, on June 21, the inter-district coordination committee involving Kavrepalanchowk, Sindhuli, and Ramechhap had decided to close the highway from 6:30 PM to 5:00 AM.
The September 2024 disaster followed three days of heavy rain, which caused major damage to the highway, a vital route linking the Kathmandu Valley with eastern Nepal. Thousands of vehicles use the road daily.
The stretch from Chaukidanda in Kavrepalanchowk to Barshekhola in Sindhuli was particularly affected, with eight kilometres of road swept away by floodwaters. Of the 160-km highway, 34 km from Khurkot to Nepalthok in Sindhuli, and 50 km from Nepalthok to Dhulikhel in Kavrepalanchowk, were damaged at various points.
