The Department of Prison Management on Saturday, August 16, transferred Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Chairman Rabi Lamichhane to Nakkhu Prison in Lalitpur from Rupandehi.
Lamichhane, also the former deputy prime minister and home minister, had been in custody at Rupandehi since early April, 2025 facing charges of cooperative fraud and organised crime.
According to the department’s Information Officer Sandesh Prasad Joshi, he was flown to Kathmandu from Bhairahawa in the evening before being taken to Nakkhu.
The transfer followed a request from Lamichhane himself to be moved out of Rupandehi prison. Security was heightened at Tribhuvan International Airport and around Nakkhu as large numbers of RSP supporters gathered in anticipation of his arrival.
