Phur Gelje Sherpa has been elected President of the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA), the umbrella body representing the country’s mountain tourism entrepreneurs.

Sherpa secured 342 votes, defeating Kul Bahadur Gurung, who received 288, reported the state-owned RSS news agency Sunday, August 24, citing the NMA's election committee.

The new leadership team includes Ishwori Poudel as Senior Vice-president, Mingma Gyalbo Sherpa as First Vice-president, Bodhraj Bhandari as Second Vice-president, and Rajendra Lama as General Secretary. Chandan Thapa was elected Secretary, while Ngima Nurbu Sherpa and Sumi Lama tied for the post of Treasurer.

Other members elected to the Executive Committee are Madhav Kumar Dhamala, Kedar Neupane, Thupden Sherpa, Gokul Thapa, Mulal Gurung, Dendi Sherpa, Bikram Karki, Rinje Sherpa, Devendra Dangol, Diki Sherpa and Nisha Bhote.

Founded in 1973, NMA works as the national alpine association to promote mountain tourism, climbing sports, protect mountain environments and preserve and promote cultural heritage of mountain people.
