Cholera Spreads to Community Level in Birgunj

At least 93 cases detected in less than a week as health workers race to contain the outbreak

Cholera has spread to the community level in Birgunj, the headquarters of Parsa district in Madhes Province.

As of Monday evening, August 25, ninety-three people had tested positive since the outbreak was first confirmed on Friday, August 22, according to Jayamod Thakur, Public Health Officer at the Health Office Parsa.

The source of the outbreak has not yet been identified, the state-owned RSS news agency reported, citing officials. Patients are under treatment at different hospitals where bacterial tests confirmed the infection.

Narayani Hospital and Tarai Hospital each reported 32 cases. Twelve cases were confirmed at National Medical College, three each at Bhawani Hospital, Birgunj Health Care and Mangalam Pathology, and two at Ali Artho Hospital, according to RSS.

Hospitals in Birgunj have received over 300 patients with cholera symptoms in recent days. Of these, 27 are currently in intensive care, six in the High Dependency Care Unit, and 122 in general wards, according to health officials.
