Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) has clarified the provisions regarding the import and export of foreign currency.
According to NRB, Nepali or foreign nationals can bring up to USD 5,000 in cash, or its equivalent in other foreign currencies, into Nepal without a customs declaration. Any amount exceeding this limit must be declared and certified at customs.
The central bank issued a notice on Tuesday through its Foreign Exchange Management Department, reiterating the provisions outlined in its previous notices issued on July 16, 2018, and April 8, 2019.
The notice also states that the use, possession, transportation, and transaction of Indian currency notes of INR 500 and INR 1,000 issued before November 9, 2016, remain prohibited. Similarly, carrying Indian currency notes of INR 200, INR 500, and INR 2,000 denominations is not allowed.
In addition, NRB confirmed that Indian currency cannot be taken to countries other than India or brought into Nepal from third countries.
