Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) announced on Sunday, August 31, that it will open exchange counters for ‘clean’ banknotes for Dashain from September 14 to 26.

Ghatasthapana, the first day of Dashain, falls on Monday, September 22 this year. Public holidays will begin from September 29 to October 17, a day after Bijaya Dashami, when people exchange tika, jamara and blessings.

The service will be available at NRB’s Currency Management Department in Thapathali, Kathmandu, its provincial offices in Biratnagar, Janakpur, Birgunj, Pokhara, Siddharthanagar, Nepalgunj and Dhangadhi, as well as through designated branches of licensed Class A, B and C banks and financial institutions, according to the central bank.

Demand for small-denomination notes—Rs 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100—typically spikes during Dashain since elderly provide dakshina (cash offerings) to younger relatives.

Until last year, NRB distributed brand-new notes for the festival. In 2024, however, it shifted to ‘clean’ notes—previously issued bills still in good condition. Officials say the move reduces the cost of printing new notes abroad, where currency is produced through international tenders, and ensures better use of banknotes that often sit idle after the festive season.

The central bank says the policy also aligns with its long-term goal of reducing reliance on cash and promoting digital transactions.
