A flood triggered by continuous rainfall has blocked the Burtibang–Rukum East section of the Mid-Hill Highway in Baglung district, leaving vehicles bound for Kathmandu and Pokhara stranded since Sunday night.

The disaster struck at Nisikhola Rural Municipality-4, completely obstructing the road at Kalapaira, said ward chair Tikanidhi Paudel. Vehicles heading to Rukum East and Rolpa via Nisi and Valkot from Burtibang are stuck at Kanabagar, he added.

Local authorities, together with highway management officials, are attempting to clear the route. But landslides at several points and fallen trees have compounded the disruption, with debris flowing whenever rain falls.

“There had never been a flood of this magnitude here,” Paudel said. “We are trying to open at least one lane.”

All rural roads in Nisikhola have also been cut off by rain-induced landslides, worsening the isolation of the area.
