Sixty-one local governments have yet to unveil their budgets for the current fiscal year, despite the provision to introduce them by Asar 10, or June 24 this year.
The fiscal year 2025/26 began on July 17.
As of now, 692 out of 753 local units have presented and put their budgets into effect, according to the Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration.
The delay has been attributed to political disputes and gaps in coordination at the local level. Of the 61, 40 are in Madhes Province, seven in Lumbini, five each in Koshi and Bagmati, three in Karnali, and one in Sudurpaschim, reported state-owned RSS news agency.
In Madhes, defaulters include 10 local units in Dhanusha, five each in Saptari, Sarlahi, Rautahat, Bara, and Parsa, three in Siraha, and one in Mahottari.
In Koshi, the list includes Itahari and Dharan sub-metropolitan cities, along with Salpasilichho Rural Municipality in Bhojpur, Sunbarshi Municipality in Morang, and Sunkoshi Rural Municipality in Okhaldhunga.
