Bhagwat Bhattarai has been elected the president of the Society of Economic Journalists-Nepal (SEJON). The 27th annual general assembly of SEJON on Saturday elected a new executive committee under the leadership of Bhattarai of Setopati.com, who secured 110 votes, defeating his nearest rival Bishwas Regmi (92 votes) and Asha Thapaliya (41 votes).
Jeevan Basnet of Karobar Daily was elected unopposed as vice president. Kamal Kumar Basnet, sub-editor at the National News Agency (RSS), won the post of general secretary with 139 votes against Achyut Puri of Online Khabar, who received 104 votes.
Similarly, Keshu Lamichhane of Ukalo.com was elected treasurer with 133 votes, defeating Mamata Thapa of Annapurna Daily, who received 108 votes. Shankar Pandit of Himalayan Television was elected unopposed as secretary.
Other newly elected members include Arjun Tamang (Tourismpati), Kamal Dhital (Bahrakhari), Bhojraj Bhandari (Corporate News), Raju Baskota (Clickmandu), and Sima Tamang (Kantipur Daily).
Chief Election Officer Dharmendra Jha handed certificates to the newly elected members. On the occasion, Jha, who is also the executive chairman of RSS, expressed confidence that the new committee would strengthen SEJON’s role in raising economic issues and enhancing its presence in the media.
SEJON has a total of 266 general members, of which 246 cast their votes in the election. -- RSS
