Tension gripped New Baneshwar on Monday afternoon after anti-government and anti-corruption protesters stormed the Federal Parliament premises, prompting authorities to impose a curfew.
Issuing a notice, the Kathmandu District Administration Office said the curfew took effect at 12:30 PM and will remain in force until 10:00 PM tonight. The order, issued under the Local Administration Act, 2028, cites threats to public peace and security.
The curfew prohibits all forms of gatherings, assemblies, protests, meetings, rallies, and sit-ins within designated areas. The restricted zone covers New Baneshwar from Everest Hotel in the west to Bijulibazaar bridge, Min Bhawan in the east to Shantinagar-Tinkune, Eyeplex Mall in the north to Ratna Rajya Secondary School, and Sankhamul area in the south to Sankhamul bridge.
The demonstration, spearheaded by Generation Z, drew massive crowds of young people who marched from Tinkune and Maitighar before converging in Baneshwar. A clash erupted as some protesters broke through police barricades and entered the Parliament grounds.
Police fired tear gas to disperse the crowd.
