Security has been tightened across all three districts of the Kathmandu Valley as youths of the “Gen Z” group staged demonstrations on Monday against corruption and the government’s social media ban.
Chief District Officer of Kathmandu Chhabi Rijal said security measures were enforced from early morning in anticipation of the protest, which in the afternoon turned tense prompting authorities to enforce curfew in Baneshwar and other sensitive areas.
CDO Rijal added that drone-assisted surveillance has been introduced to monitor the situation and prevent any untoward incidents. “The protest is being recorded, which will help us take prompt action if needed,” he said.
Senior Superintendent of Police Shekhar Khanal, spokesperson for the Kathmandu Valley Police Office in Ranipokhari, said that security forces have been strategically deployed, especially at the Maitighar area where large number of protesters had gathered.
Authorities said security surveillance across the valley has been tightened following reports of youth groups protesting ban on social media platforms. -- RSS
