Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak resigned on Monday evening, following the deaths of 19 protesters across Nepal during the Generation Z-led demonstrations against corruption and the government’s ban on over two dozen social media platforms.

Lekhak submitted his resignation to Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli during a cabinet meeting at the Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar, according to a minister present at the meeting. The move came amid mounting political and public pressure after the protests turned deadly.

In Kathmandu alone, at least 17 protesters were killed, while two others lost their lives in Itahari, Sunsari. More than 400 people are receiving treatment in hospitals across the Kathmandu Valley, many with gunshot wounds.

The resignation followed earlier demands from Congress office-bearers, where General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwaprakash Sharma urged Lekhak to step down on ethical grounds.

Lekhak assumed office as Home Minister in mid-July 2024.
