India’s Ministry of External Affairs on Tuesday said it is closely monitoring the developments in Nepal.
“[We] are deeply saddened by the loss of many young lives,” the statement issued by the ministry read. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased. We also wish a speedy recovery for those who were injured.”
As a close friend and neighbour, MEA added, it hopes that all parties will exercise restraint and resolve issues through peaceful dialogue.
The statement also noted that authorities have imposed curfews in Kathmandu and several other Nepali cities. Indian nationals in Nepal have been advised to exercise caution and follow the guidelines issued by local authorities.
Meanwhile, anger over Monday’s deadly crackdown on Gen-Z-led protests continues to fuel demonstrations across the country. Protesters are defying curfews and prohibitory orders issued by district administrations.
Photos and videos circulating on social media show instances of arson and vandalism, with demonstrators targeting government buildings as well as properties of political parties and their leaders, particularly those of the Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli-led CPN-UML.
