Top Officials Express Condolences, Urge Peaceful Resolution Amid Ongoing Protests
Following the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, Nepal’s top government and security officials on Tuesday expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives in recent protests across Kathmandu and other parts of the country, urging all citizens to remain calm and help restore peace.
Issuing a joint appeal, Chief Secretary Ek Narayan Aryal, Nepali Army Chief Ashok Raj Sigdel, Armed Police Force Inspector General Raju Aryal, Nepal Police Inspector General Chandra Kuber Khapung, Home Secretary Gokarna Mani Duwadi and National Investigation Department Chief Hutaraj Thapa conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and paid tribute to those who lost their lives in the demonstrations.
The officials stressed that with the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli already accepted, it was crucial for ordinary citizens to avoid further harm during this transitional period. They called on all sides to resolve the matter through political dialogue and urged all to contribute to an immediate, peaceful, and sustainable solution.
The Gen Z protest on Monday turned violent, resulting in the deaths of at least 19 people, mostly students, due to excessive force by the security forces. This flared the protest on Tuesday as discontent spread to every nook and corner of the capital and other parts of the country, with protesters burning down houses of top leaders including KP Sharma Oli, Sher Bahadur Deuba, Ramesh Lekkhak, Pushpa Kamal Dahal.
Videos on social media also showed security personnel rescuing Deuba and his wife, both of whom seemed to have been physically assaulted by the protesters.
