Several branches of banks and financial institutions (BFIs) were targeted in vandalism and arson during the Generation Z-led protests on Tuesday, September 9. Despite this, the banking system remains secure, the Nepal Bankers’ Association (NBA) said Wednesday.
NBA President Santosh Koirala said that while some branches sustained physical damage, cash and core systems were unaffected. “Servers and vaults are safe,” he said, noting that BFIs maintain backup of their data servers at multiple locations, reducing the risk of major system disruptions.
On Tuesday evening, the Nepali Army intervened to secure the Rastriya Banijya Bank’s New Baneshwar branch after an attempted vandalism. The NBA also reported damage to some ATMs at sites targeted for arson, including Bhatbhateni stores.
The association said a detailed assessment of the overall damage is currently underway.
