President Ramchandra Paudel on Thursday, September 11, said that he is making “every possible effort” to navigate Nepal through its ongoing political crisis, emphasising that all measures will remain within the constitutional framework.
In a statement, the Head of State said he has been holding consultations and exploring constitutional solutions aimed at safeguarding democracy and restoring law and order. He urged everybody to trust the ongoing process and cooperate in maintaining peace and stability nationwide.
Paudel’s remarks come amid rising concerns over a power vacuum following the collapse of the KP Sharma Oli-led government on Tuesday—just a day after violent crackdown on Gen Z-led protests against corruption and social media ban. The demonstrations turned destructive the following day with protesters targeting both private and public property, including key government institutions across the executive, legislative, and judicial branches as well houses of political leaders. The Nepal Army has since been deployed nationwide to restore order.
The President’s statement coincides with mounting calls for him to take a more proactive role in stabilising the situation. One such appeal came from the Brihat Nagarik Andolan, a broad civil society alliance. In a statement Thursday, the group urged Paudel to steer the nation through the deadlock and warned of attempts by what it described as “counter-revolutionary” forces to undermine the achievements of the Gen Z protests.
The alliance accused these forces of seeking to restore the monarchy and roll back secularism—moves it said contradict the youth uprising’s mandate. It stressed that the Gen Z protests were not aimed at dismantling the republic or expanding the army’s influence, but at uprooting corruption.
“The sacrifices of the martyrs must not be allowed to go in vain,” the statement read. “There is an urgent need to defeat the counter-revolution and protect the gains of the Gen Z uprising.”
Warning that attempts to revive entrenched power structures could threaten Nepal’s constitutional order and steer the country back toward authoritarianism, the group accused vested interests of exploiting the unrest for personal gain. It called on political parties, civil society, professionals, and youth groups to unite in defending the Constitution and resisting any rollback of democratic achievements.
“Nepal now stands at a decisive crossroads,” the statement said. “The country must either advance with reforms or risk slipping back into political capture and instability.” It also urged swift anti-corruption reforms, restoration of public trust in state institutions, and justice for those killed or injured during the protests. Otherwise, it warned, young protesters could return to the streets.
“Fulfilling the dreams of the Gen Z martyrs requires defeating the counter-revolution and safeguarding the Constitution,” the alliance added. “Citizens must remain united and vigilant to protect the future of Nepal’s democracy.”
