The onset of autumn trekking season and the Dashain holiday rush are drawing a growing number of domestic tourists to the Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) and the scenic Maurice Herzog Trail in Myagdi district.
Shyam Purja, a member of the local government, said around 40 trekkers are currently visiting the base camp, located in Annapurna Rural Municipality-4. He expects the number to rise further during the upcoming Dashain holidays.
Long overlooked despite its potential, the Annapurna Base Camp and Maurice Herzog Trail are gaining popularity thanks to recent promotional efforts, improved infrastructure, and better hospitality services.
Nestled along the banks of the Mistrikhola stream, ABC offers a tranquil setting rich in rare flora and fauna. Trekkers can reach the base camp in two days from Narchyang and return within three days.
Until a few years ago, the area remained largely deserted. However, the arrival of domestic trekkers has increased following the construction of trekking trails and attractions such as Panchkunda Lake, Futphute Lake, caves, and waterfalls. Under a policy decision of the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP), local youths from Narchyang now operate eateries, campsites, and other businesses to serve visitors.
Local entrepreneurs have also pooled resources to establish hotels at key points along the route. The camping sites can accommodate up to 50 tourists a day.
Despite the growing interest, visitors have raised concerns about inadequate garbage management and sanitation facilities, highlighting the need for improved waste management as tourism continues to expand. -- RSS
