The Independent Power Producers’ Association, Nepal (IPPAN), has called on the government to step up security measures amid rising threats to hydropower projects.
In separate letters sent Sunday, September 28, to the Minister for Home Affairs and the Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, IPPAN President Ganesh Karki said investors are facing pressure to provide a 10 percent “service charge” on projects at various stages of development — a demand that contradicts government policy and existing laws.
IPPAN urged the government to guarantee a safe environment for investment, noting the strategic importance of the energy sector for Nepal’s growth.
The association highlighted the case of the 45-megawatt Bhotekoshi Hydropower Project, which has remained shut for the past 17 days after groups in Bhotekoshi Rural Municipality demanded a free 10 percent stake in the name of “Gen-Z.” The closure has caused estimated daily losses of around Rs 9.8 million, IPPAN said in its letter.
