The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has forecast increased monsoon activity across Nepal beginning Friday, October 3, and has urged the public to remain cautious.
In a special bulletin issued Tuesday night, the Department said the heightened activity is linked to a low-pressure trough developing over the Bay of Bengal, which is expected to bring rainfall to various parts of the country.
Meteorologist Binu Maharjan told RSS that although the current monsoon influence over Nepal remains relatively weak, the trough originating from the Bay of Bengal is gradually shifting from Odisha, India, toward Nepal. It is likely to reach Nepal by Friday, triggering widespread rainfall.
Monsoon conditions are expected to intensify in Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, Gandaki, and Lumbini provinces starting October 3. Maharjan noted that this means the Dashain festival will see the influence of monsoon weather this year.
On October 3, light to moderate rain is likely in the hill and Terai areas of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, and Lumbini provinces, with heavy rain in a few places. The following day, many areas of Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, Gandaki, and Lumbini provinces are expected to receive light to moderate rainfall, while some areas may experience heavy to very heavy rain. On October 5, the pattern is expected to continue, with light to moderate rainfall across several areas of the same provinces. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is also forecast in parts of Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, and Gandaki, with the possibility of extremely heavy downpours in isolated locations.
With the monsoon expected to remain active until the end of the Dashain festival, the Department has warned of possible landslides, floods, and soil erosion, which may disrupt both road and air transport. The public has been advised to stay updated with weather bulletins and exercise caution, particularly in high-risk areas. -- RSS
