Authorities have opened all 56 sluice gates of the Koshi Barrage after the water level in the Saptakoshi River rose above the danger mark following continuous rainfall.

At 8 AM Sunday, October 5, 50 gates had already been opened when the river flow at the barrage reached 330,060 cubic metres per second. Within fifteen minutes, the discharge surged past 335,360 cubic metres per second, prompting officials to open all gates, said Sunsari Chief District Officer Dharmendra Kumar Mishra.

A red warning light has been activated and red flags hoisted to alert nearby residents and travellers of the flood risk.

Given the increased danger of inundation in low-lying areas of Sunsari and Udayapur districts, Mishra urged communities along the riverbanks to remain on high alert.
