Vendors clean up the Balkhu vegetable market in Kathmandu on Sunday morning, October 5, after floodwaters from the swollen Bagmati River left the area covered in mud and debris overnight. Continuous rainfall since Friday evening had inundated several parts of the Valley as river levels rose following heavy showers in the Kathmandu Valley and upstream areas.
Although the rain subsided early Sunday, meteorologists warn of possible light to moderate showers throughout the day, while eastern Nepal is expected to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall. The government has declared public holidays for today and tomorrow in view of the weather forecast.
Road damage and supply disruptions are likely to push up vegetable prices in the coming days.
