Continuous rainfall across the eastern hills and Tarai districts has sharply increased the water level and flow of the Saptakoshi River.

At 11 a.m. on Sunday, October 5, the flow through the Koshi Barrage was recorded at 510,960 cusecs. The latest measurement shows a further rise to 533,540 cusecs, according to Sunsari Chief District Officer Dharmendra Kumar Mishra, who spoke to the state-run RSS news agency.

All 56 sluice gates of the Koshi Barrage were opened Sunday morning in response to the swelling water level. A red warning light has been activated and red flags hoisted as warning signals, and vehicular movement around the barrage area has been suspended.

Meanwhile, a Nepali team led by CDO Mishra, accompanied by security personnel, joined officials from India’s Bihar Water Resources Department to conduct a joint inspection of the Koshi Barrage.
