The government has scrapped the use of blue number plates for vehicles belonging to honorary consuls appointed by foreign governments in Nepal.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the move follows growing complaints about the misuse of vehicles carrying such diplomatic plates. The decision aligns with international law governing honorary consulates, the principle of reciprocity, the Regulation on Honorary Consuls, 2039, and existing practices, the ministry added.
Of the 67 consulates general operating in Nepal, 50 had been using such vehicles, reported the state-owned RSS news agency. The Foreign Ministry said it will coordinate with relevant agencies to implement the decision.
Vehicles currently bearing blue number plates will now be reclassified as private vehicles.
Other privileges and rights accorded to honorary consuls remain unchanged.
