Weather experts have warned of nationwide rainfall and snowfall this week as the combined influence of Cyclone Montha in the Bay of Bengal and a low-pressure system over the Arabian Sea has brought widespread cloud cover across Nepal.
According to the Weather Forecasting Division of the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, the interaction of these two systems, along with westerly winds, has resulted in generally cloudy conditions across the country since Monday night.
According to the Division, heavy rainfall and snowfall are expected in the hill and mountainous areas of Bagmati, Gandaki, and Karnali provinces later today. Meanwhile, moderate rainfall and snowfall are likely in the hill and mountainous regions of Gandaki, Lumbini, and Karnali provinces.
Climate expert Binod Pokharel said precipitation has already started in western Nepal since Monday night.
“Rain and snow will spread across the mountains and mid-hills on Tuesday and become widespread from Thursday to Friday,” Pokharel, an associate professor at Tribhuvan University’s Central Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, wrote on X, adding that heavy rain is possible in Madhesh, Bagmati, and Koshi provinces between Thursday and Saturday.
The Department has advised the public and travellers to stay alert to possible travel disruptions in high-altitude and hill regions, particularly in central and eastern Nepal, due to rain and snowfall in the coming days.
