The government has launched a new automated customs management system at the Birgunj Customs Office to enhance efficiency and transparency in customs clearance procedures.
As outlined in the current fiscal year’s budget, Finance Minister Rameshore Khanal digitally inaugurated the system amid a special function held on Saturday, replacing the existing reference-price list.
Speaking at the event, Finance Minister Khanal expressed confidence that the introduction of this system would make it easier for the private sector—an important pillar of the national economy—to conduct business with assurance of security and good governance.
He said the online customs database system had been implemented on a trial basis to recognize transaction values in line with the ‘GATT Valuation System’ approved by the World Trade Organization, which has also been incorporated into Nepal’s Customs Act and Regulations.
Minister Khanal added, “The implementation of this system will encourage legitimate trade and support the effective enforcement of value-added tax and other taxes. It is also expected to reduce informal transactions and promote industrial and business growth.”
The inauguration was attended by Finance Secretary Ghanshyam Upadhyaya, Director General of the Department of Customs Shyam Prasad Bhandari, Joint Secretary Uttarkumar Khatri, Revenue Investigation Director General Tirtha Chiluwal, Chief Customs Administrator of the Birgunj office Bishnu Prasad Gyawali, an ADB customs-valuation expert Nirmalhari Adhikari and the President of the Birgunj Chamber of Commerce and Industry Hari Gautam. -- RSS
