Vehicular movement along major highways obstructed by recent landslides has resumed following repair and debris clearance, allowing the flow of traffic that had been halted for several days in different parts of the country.

Kagbeni–Korala Road Reopens After Repair

Traffic along the Kagbeni–Korala road in Mustang has resumed after repair work was completed. The section, which had been closed for 36 hours due to road collapse triggered by rainfall, reopened on Sunday.

The repair work began on Saturday morning under the coordination of the District Administration Office, with joint efforts from security agencies, local representatives, and the Kaligandaki Corridor (Beni–Jomsom–Korala) Road Project.

Rainfall had damaged about 12 kilometers of the road between Kagbeni and Chhaille, disrupting vehicular movement along the Korala route. Vehicles traveling to and from Korala had been stranded in Chhaille and Chhusang of Baragung Muktikshetra Rural Municipality-3.

Chief District Officer Bishnu Prasad Bhusal said that a temporary 100-meter diversion was built two kilometers north of Kagbeni to restore movement along the Korala road. Similarly, local authorities filled the collapsed portion of the Chhaille road using machinery to make it operational, said Ward Chairperson Pramesh Gurung of Baragung-1. Smaller landslide-affected areas were also cleared to reopen the route.

According to the Chhusang Area Police Office, around 100 stranded vehicles have now continued their journeys following the full resumption of the Kagbeni–Korala road.

Ward Chairperson Binod Gurung of Baragung Muktikshetra-3 said that the section has been opened for traffic on a temporary basis. Four heavy machines were mobilized simultaneously to clear the route. However, Ward Chairperson Karma Ghyacho Gurung said only light vehicles can currently operate, as large goods carriers still face difficulties along the damaged section. The Jomsom–Kagbeni section had already resumed traffic from Saturday after repair work.

BP Highway Reopens After Three Days

Vehicular movement along the BP Highway, which had remained blocked for three days due to landslides and flooding, resumed on Sunday morning.

The highway was obstructed at several points between Chaukidanda and Nepalthok in Kavrepalanchok district. Traffic was restored after the Division Road Office, Bhaktapur, cleared landslide debris and constructed a temporary diversion, said Senior Divisional Engineer Suman Yogesh.

A 50-meter diversion was built at Roshi Rural Municipality-8 to bring vehicles back into operation. Yogesh noted that the removal of debris was difficult due to landslides triggered by continuous rainfall since October 30.

Prithvi Highway Reopens for Two-Way Traffic

Two-way traffic along the Prithvi Highway has also resumed after a dry landslide blocked the route on Sunday night.

The landslide occurred at Chumkhola, Ichchhakamana-3 of Chitwan district, around 9 p.m. According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Rabindra Khanal, the information officer at the District Police Office, Chitwan, the highway was cleared by the Department of Roads and reopened for two-way traffic later the same night. -- RSS
