Ten leftist parties, including the CPN (Maoist Centre) and the CPN (Unified Socialist), announced their unification at a special ceremony held at Bhrikuti Mandap on Wednesday.

The unified party has been named the Nepali Communist Party. Other parties joining the merger include the Nepal Socialist Party, Janasamajbadi Party Nepal, Nepal Communist Party, CPN (Maoist Socialist), and CPN (Communist).

Top leaders and cadres from the participating parties, including Maoist Centre Chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Unified Socialist Chair Madhav Kumar Nepal, senior Maoist leader Narayan Kaji Shrestha, Unified Socialist leader Bamdev Gautam, Nepal Socialist Party Chair Mahendra Raya Yadav, and Nepal Communist Party General Secretary Chiran Pun, attended the unity declaration event.

The newly unified party declared ‘Marxism–Leninism’ as its guiding principle and ‘scientific socialism with Nepali characteristics’ as its political programme. The event also unveiled the party’s election symbol — the five-pointed star.

Speaking on the occasion, Unified Socialist leader and Unity Coordination Committee member Pramesh Hamal said the parties united to strengthen the broader communist movement and pursue socialist revolution through good governance, social justice, and economic transformation.

He said the unified party would focus on protecting the gains of the people’s democratic revolution, safeguarding national sovereignty, and promoting socio-economic prosperity and transformation while laying the foundation for socialism.

The parties agreed to hold a National Unity Convention within six months. They also decided to form a central committee through mutual understanding by integrating members of the former central committees of the uniting parties.

Each party committee — from the central to ward levels — will have a coordinator and joint coordinator. The unification agreement states that representation in the National Unity Congress and the organisational structure of the new party will be determined through mutual consensus.

The party will operate under the principle of democratic centralism based on a collective leadership system. -- RSS
