The Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN) has urged the government to make the Trekking Information Management System (TIMS) card mandatory for all foreign trekkers to help minimize the risks posed by natural disasters.

In a press release issued on Thursday, TAAN General Secretary Sonam Gyalzen Sherpa said the mandatory use of the TIMS card would make it easier to track trekkers’ destinations and locations, and to conduct effective search and rescue operations. He also called for providing sufficient information and awareness for domestic trekkers.

The association said that the lack of full implementation of the TIMS system has created challenges in identifying the whereabouts of trekkers and their guides during emergencies.

TAAN President Sagar Pandey noted that even domestic trekkers have lost their lives due to natural disasters and altitude sickness, often caused by inadequate preparation and lack of proper guidance.

Extending condolences to the climbers, trekkers, and guides who lost their lives in the Manaslu and Rolwaling regions following the recent rainfall and snowfall, TAAN also wished a speedy recovery to the injured and the safe return of those still missing. -- RSS
