Agitating locals of Melamchi have completely stopped water supply to Kathmandu stating that the government has not fulfilled its promise to address their demands.

According to Executive Director of the Melamchi Water Supply Development Committee, Jagarnath Das, locals at the source area shut down the system on Thursday, halting the transfer of water to Kathmandu.

“The locals closed the source demanding the implementation of the agreement reached last year with then Minister for Water Supply, Pradeep Yadav,” said Das. “As a result, the supply of Melamchi water to Kathmandu has been completely stopped since Thursday afternoon.”

Locals, including those affected by the 2021 floods and landslides, took the step after their demands remained unaddressed. The supply, which had been suspended during the monsoon season, had just resumed on October 12.

Das said that discussions would be held with the agitating groups to find a solution and resume the water supply.

A week ago, four concerned committees from Sindhupalchok and Kavre had padlocked the Melamchi Water Supply Office in Panipokhari, Kathmandu. -- RSS
