The second edition of the Nepal Premier League (NPL) begins at the Tribhuvan University Cricket Ground in Kirtipur from today (November 17).

According to Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) President Chatur Bahadur Chand, the opening ceremony will start at 2 pm, followed by the first match at 4 pm. Defending champions Janakpur Bolts will face Kathmandu Gurkhas in the tournament opener.

This year’s NPL will run until December 13, featuring 32 matches, including the league stage, three playoffs and the final. With the recent upgrades to the TU Cricket Ground—such as newly built parapets accommodating 10,000 spectators and the installation of floodlights—night matches will be held for the first time, adding to the excitement among fans.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports officially handed over the infrastructure in the first phase to CAN through the National Sports Council on Sunday evening, ahead of the tournament’s launch.

CAN said the tournament winner will receive Rs 11 million, while the runner-up will get Rs 5.1 million. The third-placed team will be awarded Rs 2.5 million and the fourth-placed team Rs 1.5 million.

All matches will be played at the Kirtipur ground. Eight franchise teams are competing: defending champions Janakpur Bolts, last season’s runners-up Sudurpaschim Royals, Karnali Yaks, Pokhara Avengers, Biratnagar Kings, Chitwan Rhinos, Kathmandu Gurkhas and Lumbini Lions.

CAN expects to earn Rs 400 million from this year’s edition of the tournament. -- RSS
