Nepali Congress, the largest party in the House of Representatives dissolved in September, will hold its General Convention from January 10-12, 2026.

A meeting of the party’s Central Committee on Monday, December 1, unanimously endorsed the proposal presented by Acting President Purna Bahadur Khadka. The decision ends a long-running internal dispute over whether the convention should be held before or after the general elections scheduled for March 5, 2026.

Monday’s meeting has decided to complete the distribution of active membership by December 6, party spokesperson Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat said. Renewal of active membership has been decided to be completed by December 10. All work related to new active membership will be finalised by 23 December.

The party said the process will ensure greater inclusion and increased youth representation. The demand for wider youth participation has grown since the Gen Z protests of September 8 and 9.

The conventions of liaison committees will take place by December 30. Village and town conventions will be held by December 31. Provincial conventions will follow on January 3.

Regional conventions and conventions in districts with a single constituency will be held by January 5. Districts with more than one constituency will hold conventions by January 6. Provincial conventions will be completed on January 7-8.

The Central Committee has also decided to extend its own tenure. The term, set to expire on 9 December, will run until mid-February 2026.
