To mark the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Nepal and Vietnam, business leaders from both countries met in Hanoi on Thursday, December 11, to discuss expanding economic cooperation.

During a meeting with the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI), Nepali business representatives outlined Nepal’s strong investment prospects. They highlighted major opportunities in tourism, hydropower, and agriculture.

Chandra Prasad Dhakal, President of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI), urged Vietnamese investors to deepen economic engagement with Nepal.

“I urge Vietnamese investors to invest in Nepal and would like to inform you that Nepal has strong export potential,” said Dhakal. “There is a good market for products such as handicrafts, tea, coffee, and herbs in Vietnam. I request you to increase investment in these areas as well.” Noting that the economies of both nations can complement each other, Dhakal pointed to Vietnam’s potential to supply agricultural goods, seafood, and electronics to Nepal.

Adding that Nepal’s foreign investment climate is improving, Dhakal stated that the legal framework is becoming more investment-friendly. Reforms in licensing, customs, and tax administration have advanced.

Dhakal also noted growing regional investments in Nepal’s tourism sector. Citing strong interest in hotels, resorts, cable cars, adventure tourism, and wellness centres, Dhakal emphasised Nepali businesses welcome Vietnamese investors.

The Nepali delegation invited the Vietnamese delegation to attend FNCCI’s upcoming annual general meeting to observe Nepal’s business environment directly.

Nguyen Quang Vinh, Deputy Executive President of VCCI, said Vietnam is keen to strengthen its economic partnership with Nepal. Expressing delight in hosting the FNCCI delegation, he emphasised the potential for cooperation in trade and investment and called for stronger economic ties.

“There is not much cooperation between the two countries in trade and investment, but there is great potential. Our cooperation will continue in the coming days,” he said.

Nepal’s Ambassador to Thailand and Vietnam, Dhan Bahadur Oli, urged both countries to fully utilise the opportunities available in trade and investment. He pointed to emerging global economic challenges and stressed the need for Nepal and Vietnam to deepen economic cooperation.

FNCCI office bearers and members of its executive committee were present at the meeting.
