Prime Minister Sushila Karki said the government has taken substantial steps to curb wasteful expenditure and strengthen financial governance during its first 100 days in office.

Addressing the milestone of the government formed on Sept 12 following the Gen-Z protests, PM Karki highlighted that unauthorized perks and benefits previously enjoyed by some officials, both during and after their tenure, have been cut to safeguard taxpayers’ money.

“To optimize public resources, 500 security personnel and vehicles deployed beyond necessity have been reassigned for public service. We have abolished 38 redundant offices and reduced 323 positions, streamlining the state’s expenditure. Budgets totaling Rs 119 billion have been reprioritized for major development projects, while a ‘Unified Business Revival Program’ has been launched for distressed enterprises,” PM Karki said on Saturday.

She also emphasized achievements in public service delivery and infrastructure: over 50,000 complaints were addressed through the ‘Hello Government’ portal, Kathmandu residents now receive 20 million liters of Melamchi water daily, and 101 MW of electricity has been added to the national grid.

Reflecting on the Gen-Z movement, PM Karki acknowledged its impact, saying, “The protests created tension and upheaval, yet the government has taken the underlying messages seriously. The essence of a vibrant democracy is to resolve crises not through street violence but via dialogue and citizens’ votes.”

The government has completed all preparations for the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for March 5, 2026, including security planning and deployment of the Nepali Army under a unified election security plan.

She noted that of 1,342 weapons looted during protests, most have been recovered. Damaged 465 police offices have been restored to strengthen law enforcement. The Election Commission has been allocated Rs 6.73 billion, and amendments to the voter registration law have enabled 837,000 new youth voters to exercise their rights.

“More than 18.1 million Nepalese now hold the power to shape the nation’s future, with 114 political parties participating, proving the resilience of our democracy,” the Prime Minister said. She stressed that the election is about ensuring democracy and good governance, not individual victories or defeats.

PM Karki underscored post-protest reconciliation efforts, including compensation and rehabilitation for victims, and reconstruction of damaged infrastructure through the Physical Infrastructure Reconstruction Fund. She urged citizens to focus on building a stable future together.

Highlighting anti-corruption measures, the Prime Minister noted that investigations into abuses of power and contract irregularities are proceeding independently, with no exceptions for high-ranking individuals.

“Following the Gen-Z movement’s message, this government has made governance and elections its guiding principle. National unity, democratic integrity, and rule of law must prevail; disorder benefits no one, only peace and stability open the doors to prosperity,” PM Karki said.

She concluded by calling on citizens to view the upcoming elections as a national ritual that will usher in a new, transparent, and prosperous chapter for Nepal. -- RSS
