Christmas Day, commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, the founder of Christianity, is being observed across Nepal on Thursday with prayers, religious services and cultural programmes.

According to Christian belief, Jesus Christ was born on December 25 around 2,025 years ago in Bethlehem.

“Christians observe Christmas Day as a day of salvation, love and peace, believing that Jesus came to free humanity, promote love and establish peace,” said CB Gahatraj, president of Nepal Christian Federation.

Gahatraj said that while Christmas is celebrated worldwide, the festival has been observed in Nepal in the form of a public celebration since 2006 following the federation’s initiative.

The Nepal Christian Federation Main Celebration Committee is organising ‘Christmas Festival 2025’ on Thursday afternoon. Government representatives, officials from concerned agencies, human rights activists and other dignitaries are expected to attend the event.

Christmas Day was observed as a public holiday in Nepal from 2006 to 2017. From 2018 to 2020, the holiday was granted only to followers of Christianity, while since 2021 it has again been observed as a public holiday for all.

In recent years, major urban centres have been decorated with Christmas trees and lights to mark the occasion. Areas with high tourist footfall, including Thamel, Boudha, Pokhara and Sauraha, have seen increased festive activities.

According to the federation, Nepal currently has around 3 million followers of Christianity and more than 13,000 churches. -- RSS
