NEPSE Slips on First Trading Day of 2026

WNLB hits upper circuit in sharp rebound, while overall market weakens

The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) index fell 0.48 percent, or 12.83 points, to close at 2,620.92 on Thursday, the first trading day of 2026.

The benchmark index had ended 2025 with a gain of 0.41 percent at 2,633.76.

Market turnover also declined on Thursday. It fell to Rs 4.71 billion from Rs 5.13 billion the previous day.

More than 10.15 million shares were traded through 64,407 transactions, lower than Wednesday’s volume of over 11.94 million shares across 63,981 transactions.

Market breadth remained negative. A total of 189 securities declined, while 63 advanced. Eight stocks closed unchanged.

All major sub-indices ended in the red. The Sensitive Index dropped 0.53 percent. The Float Index fell 0.47 percent. The Sensitive Float Index declined 0.56 percent.

In a sharp reversal, Wean Nepal Laghubitta Bittiya Sanstha Limited (WNLB) emerged as the top gainer. The stock hit the upper circuit after being the biggest loser for three consecutive sessions. SY Panel Nepal Limited followed, rising 9.99 percent.

Global IME Sammunat Yojana–2 recorded the steepest loss of the day,  hitting the lower circuit.

In terms of turnover, SY Panel Nepal Limited led the market. Shares worth Rs 234.11 million were traded. It was followed by Shivam Cements Ltd (SHIVM) and Butwal Power Company Ltd (BPCL).

Among the 13 sectoral indices, only the ‘Others’ index closed marginally higher, 0.01 percent. The Trading sector posted the biggest loss, down 1.09 percent. 

All sectoral indices had closed higher the previous day.
