The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) index gained 1.10 percent, or 28.73 points, to close at 2,639.37 on Monday, January 5.
The benchmark index had declined by 0.39 percent on Sunday and 0.48 percent on Thursday, January 1. It had ended 2025 with a modest gain of 0.41 percent at 2,633.76.
Market activity also improved on Monday. Daily turnover increased to Rs 6.47 billion from Rs 5.01 billion in the previous session. More than 12.45 million shares were traded through 84,990 transactions, up from 10.27 million shares exchanged in 79,702 transactions on Sunday.
Of the traded stocks, 214 advanced, 37 declined and eight remained unchanged.
All major sub-indices closed higher. The Sensitive Index rose 0.85 percent, the Float Index gained 1.12 percent, and the Sensitive Float Index increased by 1.01 percent.
Five companies—Sagar Distillery Limited (SAGAR), SY Panel Nepal Limited (SYPNL), Shreenagar Agritech Industries Limited (SAIL), Bandipur Cablecar and Tourism Limited (BANDIPUR), and Ru Ru Jalbidhyut Pariyojana Limited (RURU)—emerged as the top gainers after hitting the upper circuit limit.
Shivam Cements Limited (SHIVM) led the market in turnover, with shares worth Rs 386.95 million changing hands. Bandipur Cablecar and Tourism Limited and SY Panel Nepal Limited followed.
All 13 sectoral indices ended in positive territory. Manufacturing and Processing recorded the highest gain of 3.05 percent, while the Trading Index posted the smallest increase of 0.22 percent.
Total market capitalisation rose to Rs 4,431.56 billion from Rs 4,383.32 billion on Sunday.
