The Nepal Layers Poultry Association has reduced the farm price of eggs by Rs 90 per crate, effective from Tuesday, January 6, citing weak demand and higher production.

With the revision, the farm-gate price of large-sized eggs (30 pieces) has dropped from Rs 565 to Rs 475 per crate, while the price of medium-sized eggs has fallen from Rs 550 to Rs 460 per crate.

Association chairman Binod Pokharel said the support price is fixed based on rates set by large farms, which has led to a decline in consumer prices from around Rs 25 to Rs 20 per egg.

He attributed the price cut to lower consumption despite increased production, adding that demand is expected to rebound as winter eases and normal daily activities resume.

Pokharel warned that further price reductions could hurt farmers, noting that the production cost stands at Rs 19.12 per egg, translating to Rs 574.06 per crate. “If prices fall again when they are already close to the cost price, farmers will face additional losses,” he said.

The association has been revising egg prices in line with market demand, he added. -- RSS
