Kulman Ghising, a household name in Nepal for eliminating load-shedding, resigned as Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation on Wednesday amid plans to contest the March 5 elections.

According to the state-run national news agency RSS, Ghising tendered his resignation to Prime Minister Sushila Karki at the Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar on Wednesday evening.

Appointed on September 15, 2025, Ghising had also been overseeing the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transportation and Urban Development. His resignation comes amid reports of his preparations to enter active politics.

According to RSS, Prime Minister Karki thanked Ghising for his leadership of three key ministries during the past three and a half months, despite what she described as adverse conditions.

“You worked tirelessly, travelled extensively across the country, remained active during disasters and personally visited affected areas,” RSS quoted Prime Minister Karki as saying. Citing the PM’s Secretariat, RSS added that PM Karki also credited him for taking firm action against irregularities in development and construction projects.

Ghising, in turn, expressed gratitude to the prime minister for the opportunity to serve during the interim period.

RSS further reported that the resignation follows scrutiny over Ghising’s political role as he prepares to contest the March 5 elections. An understanding has been reached between Ujjyalo Party Nepal, which Ghising conceptualized, and the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) for a possible merger. Under the agreement, Ghising is set to become a vice-president of the RSP, an emerging force that has posed a challenge to the traditional political parties in Nepal. – With inputs from RSS
