Remittance inflows to Nepal surged by 35.6 percent to Rs 870.31 billion in the first five months of the current fiscal year 2025/26, according to the Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB).

The figures were published in the Current Macroeconomic and Financial Situation Report, released by the central bank on Friday, January 9.

NRB said remittance inflows during the review period rose sharply compared to a growth of just 4.7 percent in the same period last fiscal year.

In US dollar terms, remittance inflows climbed by 29 percent to $6.16 billion during the review period. In contrast, inflows had grown by only 3.4 percent in dollar terms in the corresponding period a year earlier, NRB said.

During mid-November to mid-December, corresponding to the month of Mangsir, Nepal received Rs 183.18 billion in remittances. This marks a significant increase from Rs 118.79 billion recorded in the same month last fiscal year.

Net secondary income, which includes net transfers, also rose sharply. It reached Rs 954.78 billion during the review period, up from Rs 700.43 billion in the corresponding period last year.

The report also shows a mixed trend in foreign employment approvals. A total of 175,591 Nepali workers received first-time approval for foreign employment during the period. This includes both institutional and individual approvals.

Meanwhile, 163,924 workers obtained re-entry approval to return to overseas jobs. In the same period last year, first-time approvals stood at 190,384, while re-entry approvals totalled 135,425.
