As Maghe Sankranti draws near, the supply of yam has surged at Kathmandu’s Kalimati and other vegetable markets. Truckloads are arriving daily, mainly from Tarai districts such as Sarlahi and Nawalparasi, and from the hill districts of Nuwakot and Sindhuli.
The festival is traditionally marked by eating yam, sweet potatoes, molasses-based confections and other seasonal delicacies.
Customer footfall has also increased in recent days. Prices vary depending on type and quality.
Photos by our photojournalist Sunil Sharma capture vendors and workers busy unloading yams at Kalimati and arranging them for sale.
