Minister for Youth and Sports Bablu Gupta resigned on Monday, January 19, and joined the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) to contest the upcoming House of Representatives elections.
“I have sent my resignation to the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers via email,” Gupta told the state-owned RSS news agency from Siraha. “I have also informed the Prime Minister about my resignation over the phone.”
A youth activist, the Sushila Karki-led interim government appointed Gupta to the post on October 26, 2025.
His resignation comes a day before the scheduled filing of nominations under the first-past-the-post system for the March 5 elections.
Earlier in the day, Gupta was seen alongside Balendra (Balen) Shah in Siraha, where they paid tributes to the martyrs of the Madhesh movement.
On Sunday, January 18, Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Balendra Shah and Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City Mayor Harka Sampang also stepped down to enter the electoral race.
Later on Monday, Balen, RSP Chair Rabi Lamichhane and other party leaders, including newly joined leader Amresh Kumar Singh, are scheduled to address a mass gathering in Janakpur.
