A total of 3,406 candidates will contest the 165 first-past-the-post seats in the House of Representatives in the March 5 elections, according to the Election Commission (EC).
The 275-member Lower House of Nepal’s Federal Parliament has 165 seats elected through the FPTP system and 110 through Proportional Representation (PR).
Releasing the final candidate list on Friday evening, January 23, the EC said 3,017 of the candidates are men, 388 are women, and one is from the gender minority group.
In terms of age, 1,056 candidates are between 25 and 40 years old. Another 1,925 fall in the 41–60 age bracket. A total of 425 candidates are above 61.
The final list was prepared after the cancellation and withdrawal of nominations filed earlier this week. A total of 3,487 candidates, including party nominees and independents, had registered their candidacies on Tuesday.
The EC has already published the list of candidates under the proportional representation system. Political parties submitted their closed lists for the proportional system on December 28 and 29. The Commission said the final list will be published after the deadline for claims and objections ends on Saturday, January 24.
