Candidates from the Nepali Congress, the CPN-UML and the Loktantrik Samajbadi Party (LSP) won the National Assembly elections held on Sunday, January 25, in line with their pre-poll alliance.

Of the 17 contested seats, the Nepali Congress and CPN-UML won eight seats each, while the LSP secured one. A total of 43 candidates contested.

The terms of 19 members of the Upper House expire on March 4, 2026. However, elections were held for 17 seats, as one seat under the Khas Arya category in Koshi Province was filled uncontested. Nepali Congress’ Sunil Bahadur Thapa was elected unopposed. One additional member will be nominated by the President on the recommendation of the Council of Ministers.

The results reflected the seat-sharing agreement reached earlier among the three parties.

Among the winners were LSP Chair Mahanta Thakur and CPN-UML leader Ram Kumari Jhakri.

Polling was held from 9 am to 3 pm, recording a turnout of 95.68 percent, according to the Election Commission. Of the 2,011 eligible voters – Provincial assembly members, mayors and deputy mayors of municipalities, and chairpersons and vice-chairpersons of rural municipalities – across the seven provinces, 1,924 cast their ballots.

The Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) boycotted the election.
