Tourist arrivals to Nepal increased by 15.7 percent year-on-year to 92,573 in January 2026, according to preliminary data from the Department of Immigration analysed by Nepal Tourism Board (NTB).

The January arrivals were also 14 percent higher than the pre-pandemic level recorded in January 2019.

India remained the largest source market, accounting for 28.8 percent of total arrivals, with 26,624 visitors. China followed with 9,101 tourists, representing 9.8 percent of the total, while the United States contributed 8,406 visitors, or 9.1 percent. Bangladesh ranked fourth with 5,814 arrivals (6.3 percent), followed by Australia with 4,957 visitors, accounting for 5.4 percent.

In regional terms, travellers from South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) countries made up the largest share, accounting for 39.3 percent of total arrivals.

Other Asian countries contributed 26.1 percent, while Europe accounted for 12.3 percent.

Visitors from the Americas represented 10.8 percent of arrivals, followed by Oceania at 5.7 percent, the Middle East at 1 percent and Africa at 0.4 percent. Tourists from other regions accounted for the remaining 4.5 percent.

Deepak Raj Joshi, Chief Executive Officer of NTB, said the January figures reflected growing international confidence in Nepal as a tourism destination. He attributed the increase in arrivals to sustained promotional campaigns, improved air connectivity, the continued appeal of adventure and cultural tourism products, and Nepal’s improving image in global tourism markets.
