Nepal received more than Rs 1 trillion in remittances during the first six months of the current fiscal year, according to Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB).
Remittance inflows surged 39.1 percent to Rs 1,062.93 billion between mid-July 2025 and mid-January 2026, the central bank said in its latest Current Macroeconomic and Financial Situation Report released on Monday, February 2. This growth is significantly higher than the modest 4.2 percent rise recorded in the same period last fiscal year.
Measured in US dollars, remittances rose 32.3 percent to $7.50 billion, compared with a 2.7 percent growth in the corresponding period of the previous year.
During Poush alone (mid-December to mid-January), remittance inflows totaled Rs 192.62 billion, up from Rs 122.44 billion in the same month last year.
Net secondary income, which includes net transfers, also rose sharply to Rs 1,168.02 billion from Rs 833.86 billion in the corresponding period last year.
Meanwhile, the outflow of Nepali workers for foreign employment continued. A total of 206,807 Nepalis received first-time approval for overseas jobs, including both institutional and individual approvals. Additionally, 194,733 workers obtained re-entry approvals. For comparison, in the same period last fiscal year, the figures were 230,439 and 162,628, respectively.
