The Election Commission has signed an agreement with short-video platform TikTok to curb the election-related misinformation and disinformation.

Nepal is set to vote on March 5 to elect 275 members of the House of Representatives, the lower house of the Federal Parliament, with 165 elected under the first-past-the-post system and 110 through proportional representation.

The memorandum of understanding was exchanged on Wednesday, February 4, by Election Commission spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai and TikTok’s Head of Public Policy and Government Relations for South Asia, Ferdous Mottakin.

Under the agreement, TikTok will support efforts to control misleading information and harmful content on its platform.

Officiating Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari said the agreement was a historic step to protect the electoral environment.
