Nepal and India have signed an agreement on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters, a move aimed at strengthening cross-border crime control. The agreement is also expected to assist in mutual assessments related to the prevention of money laundering and terrorist financing, officials said.

Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Binod Kumar Bhattarai signed the agreement on behalf of the Government of Nepal, while Indian Ambassador to Nepal Naveen Srivastava signed for the Indian government, the state-owned national news agency RSS reported Tuesday.

Spokesperson for the Law Ministry, Dal Bahadur Adhikari, confirmed that the cabinet meeting held on October 16, 2025 authorized the signing of the agreement.

The agreement will formally pave the way for cooperation between the concerned authorities of both countries, including the collection and exchange of evidence during investigation, prosecution, and judicial proceedings of criminal cases, Adhikari said.

He added that the agreement will significantly contribute to strengthening the rule of law and enhancing institutional coordination in judicial administration.

The agreement will make collaboration between the central authorities of both countries stronger and more results-oriented, according to a press release issued by the Ministry.

Adhikari stated that the agreement will serve as a milestone in reducing financial crimes in Nepal and making investigation, prosecution, and justice delivery more effective. With inputs from RSS
