The Sherpa community observed the Gyalpo Lhosar festival on Wednesday, February 18. The government has declared a nationwide public holiday to mark the occasion.

Gyalpo Lhosar is the Sherpa community’s New Year and is celebrated annually on Falgun Shukla Pratipada, the first day of the bright fortnight in the Nepali month of Falgun (mid-February to mid-March).

The festival follows a 12-year cycle represented by different animals: Mouse, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Bird, Dog and Boar. This year marks the 2153rd Gyalpo Lhosar and the beginning of the Year of the Horse.

Large crowds of Sherpa people have gathered in Boudha, Kathmandu, to celebrate the festival.

According to the Himalayan Buddhist calendar, Gyalpo Lhosar is observed on the first day of the first month, a tradition that signifies the start of a new “Lho” cycle and the beginning of a new year.
