Chandra Prasad Dhakal, President of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI), said on Saturday, February 21, that Nepal and India need to deepen economic cooperation.

Dhakal was addressing the 2nd Indo-Nepal Trade Festival 2026 in New Delhi.

He stressed the need to simplify customs procedures and strengthen digital trade systems. Facilitating access to finance and technology transfer for small and medium enterprises was equally important, he added.

India is Nepal’s largest trading partner.

“he open border, cultural proximity and strong people-to-people ties make the bilateral partnership distinctive,” the FNCCI statement quoted Dhakal as saying.

Referring to global economic uncertainty and supply chain disruptions, Dhakal stressed the need for stronger cooperation between neighbours.

He said priorities outlined in India’s recently presented Union Budget — focused on infrastructure, digital connectivity, green energy and the promotion of small and medium enterprises — could open up new opportunities for Nepal as well.

Nepal exports electricity to India during the monsoon season. “With adequate transmission lines and policy stability, Nepal could emerge as a reliable green energy partner for India,” Dhakal said.

He added that investment opportunities are expanding across Nepal’s energy and tourism sectors. He also pointed to prospects in industrial estates, special economic zones, cross-border logistics, agro-processing, pharmaceuticals, education and healthcare services.

The FNCCI President also called on Indian entrepreneurs and investors to deepen cooperation in green energy, digital services, tourism and manufacturing.
